Writing
At BHPS we aim to foster a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and are able to adapt their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
We plan to ensure children get ample opportunity to practise the key skills of spelling, handwriting and sentence construction and therefore can increasingly acquire the more complex skills of composition.
We begin the writing journey by developing fine motor skills and introducing pen hold and forming letters. Children are enthused to write, by immersion in texts, giving real reasons to write. As speaking, listening, reading and phonic knowledge is acquired, writing skills develop alongside; initially with a focus on accurate spelling and sentence construction and later creating texts of increasing complexity and depth.
All good writers refine and edit their writing over time, so we encourage our children to identify their own areas for improvement at an age-appropriate level. Children are taught the skills of editing and re-drafting in order to reach a final complete piece of writing.
